Your Soldier Just Left for Basic Training. What Happens Next?
Saying goodbye is the hardest part. Now comes the waiting.
If your Soldier just left for Basic Training, it's completely normal to wonder what's happening and when you'll hear from them again. Here's what to expect during the first week.
Reception Comes First
Before Basic Training begins, every Soldier goes through Reception.
During Reception, they complete paperwork, receive uniforms and equipment, go through medical and dental processing, and get assigned to their training company.
Reception usually lasts about 4 to 10 days, depending on the installation.
Don't Worry When the Phone Goes Silent
Soon after arriving, your Soldier will usually turn in their personal phone.
Don't expect texts or phone calls during Reception. The silence is normal and doesn't mean anything is wrong.
Watch for the Script Call
Every Reception is a little different.
For some families, the first call is the scripted call. Your Soldier quickly reads a prepared message with their mailing address and lets you know they arrived safely.
For others, the first call may be a short conversation lasting anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. The scripted call with the mailing address comes later.
It all depends on how Reception is running at that training installation.
Whether your first call is a conversation or a scripted message, don't be surprised if communication becomes very limited afterward.
My Best Tip
Before your Soldier leaves, ask them to leave the script call as a voicemail if you don't answer.
Trying to write down the address during a fast phone call can be stressful. A voicemail lets you replay it as many times as you need.
If you prefer to answer the call, keep a pen and paper with you at all times during those first few days.
Personally, I recommend the voicemail method.
While You Wait
There isn't much you need to do right now.
Keep your phone nearby, make sure your voicemail isn't full, and wait for the script call.
